Artistic Staff Michael Faulkner ![]() Dr. Faulkner is a native of Ridgewood, New Jersey. He received his BM, MM, and DMA in violin performance from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (1968, !974, 1980) studying with Walter Levin of the LaSalle String Quartet and the famed Dorothy DeLay. He served with the Air Force Strings (division of the Air Force Band) 1969-1973, was an Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music (1976-1979), served as an Orchestra Director with the Fairfax County Public Schools (1979-1983), and as a violinist with the Marine Chamber Orchestra of the U.S. Marine Band from 1983 until he retired in 2007. The Marine Chamber Orchestra is the premier ensemble which performs regularly for events held at the White House. These include State Dinners and receptions of all kinds. They present public orchestra and chamber music concerts at various venues in the Metropolitan Washington area and in Maryland and Virginia, and at other special events such as the State Funerals for Presidents Reagan and Ford at the National Cathedral. During the Clinton administration Dr. Faulkner was tasked by the then current director, Colonel Bourgeois, to form a new group within the Marine Band to play at State Dinners and other occasions at the White House, Supreme Court and wherever needed in the metropolitan area in service of the President. He was responsible for the leadership of this group, and provided advice to the White House with regard to the selection of appropriate pieces for State Visits and other events. Other work/academic experiences include touring with the "American Youth Symphony on Tour" based at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, several years at the Meadowmount School studying with Margaret Pardee and Ivan Galamian, studies in orchestral playing and chamber music at Tanglewood where he was a Fromm Fellow. In Washington he has been a member of the Pan American Orchestra, performing at the Kennedy Center, substituted with the National Symphony Orchestra, was a member of the Handel Festival Orchestra, the Washington Chamber Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, among others. Dr. Faulkner has always maintained a private teaching studio where he employs the Suzuki Method as well as the traditional approach to teaching. |
