Julianna Hsing (AYSO, violin) received First Place in the 13-year-old group at the the Maryland State Music Teacher Association (MSMTA) Solo Festival. Nicolette A. Cho (AYSE, cello) is the Principal cellist for the Montgomery All County Junior Orchestra (7th - 9th grade division). Jacob Sanders (AYCO, Principal cello) won First place as part of a trio in the Maryland State Music Teachers Association Strings Plus Festival. Rebekah Carpio (AYP, clarinet) was one of two young musicians from Virginia to be selected to the Music for All's 2008 Honor Orchestra of America. She was 2nd Chair and played under Maestro Larry Livingston in a double-billed program with the Indianapolis Symphony in Indianapolis. Rebekah Carpio (AYP, clarinet) played a Solo Concerto with the Trinity Chamber Orchestra at St. Ann's Church on Sunday, April 13, 2008. Rebekah Carpio (AYP, clarinet) and Stephen Houck (AYP, trombone) were each finalists, of only eight total, for the U.S. Navy Band Concerto Competition. The finalists will perform with the Navy Band at North Point High School in Waldorf, Maryland, on May 2, 2008, at 7:30pm. Fedor Ouspensky (AYSE, Co-concertmaster violin) won the First prize in the Bachanalia Young Artists Competition in New York and was the youngest participant in the age group of 18 and up. On March 12th he performed an entire Vivaldi concerto with the Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra in Merkin Hall of the Kaufman Center. This was also his first conducting experience as the performance went without a conductor. He played the 1679 Thomasso Carcassi violin on loan from Singer Fine Violins provided for the concert as part of the First Prize. Fedor has a website which can be visited at www.2kids.org. The following AYPO musicians won prizes at the 37th Annual Joseph and Goldie Feder String Competition. First Prize winners will be performing at the Awards Ceremony on April 10th, 6:30pm at the Sumner School Museum in Washington, DC:
The following AYPO musicians were recognized in the City of Fairfax Band 2008 Young Artist Competition:
Dominic Favia (AYP, trumpet) placed Second in the Junior Division at the National Trumpet Competition, for the second year in a row. This is the biggest and most prestigious trumpet competition in the US, and is held every spring at George Mason University. The following AYPO musicians were recognized in the 2008 U.S. Army Orchestra Young Artist Competition. They will be performing with the U.S. Army Orchestra in concert on Sunday, May 4, 2008, 4:00pm at the University of Maryland's Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, with a solo performance by Alex Grimes:
Alex Grimes (AYP, Co-Principal viola) and Tim (Tianheng) Wang (AYP, cello) have been selected as finalists for the National Symphony Orchestra Young Soloists’ Competition for instrumentalists and pianists in the DC metropolitan area, High School Division, which was held on December 8, 2007. All finalists will be invited to join the student membership of the Friday Morning Music Club without audition. Winners will receive a one-year dues-free membership. Finals concert was held in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 6pm. Both musicians were also finalists in the 2006 NSO Young Soloists’ Competition, High School Division. Anna Wuttig (AYP, Co-Concertmaster violin) is a winner of the prestigious Washington Post 6th Annual Music and Dance Awards - selected out of hundreds applicants all over the greater Washington, D.C. area, and she will receive scholarship towards her first year of college. Anna was selected based on artistic talent and academic achievement. Anna is also a finalist of the Maryland State Distinguished Scholar Program for Talent and will receive scholarship for any college in the state of Maryland, and the selection was based solely on talent. Travis Pryor (AYP, trumpet) was accepted to the University of Maryland School of Music, and awarded a music scholarship. Alexander Yin (AYP, violin) was accepted to study at the Meadowmount School of Music this summer, in the Adirondack Mountains, Westport, NY. This will be his 2nd year at Meadowmount. The following AYPO musicians were admitted to the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for summer 2008:
Alex Glaubitz (AYP, Co-Principal cello) was selected as the recipient of the full scholarship offered to a 3-week chamber music program run through Walnut Hill (New England Conservatory) as well as waitlisted at The Perlman Music Program and Yellow Barn Music School & Festival this summer. Christopher Hsing (AYP, Co-Principal cello) was accepted to the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) Summer Music Institute, Aspen Music Festival and the Britt Institute String Quartet Academy.
