Orchestra Terms to Know

Run-Out Concerts: These community concerts are one way that the orchestras can reach out into the local community to share the magic of music to people who are not already part of our regular audience and also to encourage the appreciation of orchestral music. Run-out concerts provide young musicians an educationally enriching experience and bolster their confidence by repeating a performance of works they have rehearsed for many weeks.

Symphonic Orchestra: An orchestra which is comprised of woodwind (Family of wind instruments that have an enclosed, vibrating air column set into motion by a reed or by blowing across or through an aperture; includes flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and their auxiliary instruments), brass (Family of tubular wind instruments most often made of brass and sounded by the buzzing of the player’s lips; includes horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba), and percussion (Family of instruments that produce sound by being struck, scraped, shaken, or plucked; includes timpani, bass drum, snare drum, and assorted auxiliary instruments), and sometimes keyboard instruments in addition to the string section (violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp). A string orchestra includes only the string instruments.

Concerto: Most frequently in modern symphonic orchestra programs, a concerto is an orchestral work with a featured soloist.

Symphony: A major work for orchestra in multiple movements (or occasionally one movement with multiple sections).
